Fishing in SpainBy Clodagh and Dick Handscombe who have lived in Spain for 25 years fitting fishing into their busy writing and gardening schedules. The Opportunities for Leisure Fishing in SpainWhether you are an occasional leisure fisherman, dedicated specimen hunter willing to spend night after night awaiting the bite of a lifetime and with luck the record books, or a regular match fisherman, fishing in Spain is great from five points of view. There are many areas of good sea and freshwater fishing and some even exceptional by international standards, fishing permits are generally not expensive and it is pleasant to sit on a bank beach or boat during most weeks of the year. Most importantly in the winter cold spells below zero can change to temperatures from 15 to 25 degrees centigrade over night and fishing venues rarely freeze up. So add ‘local fishing potential’ to the check list of wants and musts that you circulate to property agents when searching for your Spanish Shangri La.
Fishing Licences are generally easy to obtain
No licence covers the whole of Spain so one will need to obtain a licence for each of the seventeen Communidades (equivalent to English counties) in which you wish to fish. But in general this no great issue for you will only need an annual or three year one for the area you plan to live in and fish regularly and weekly of monthly ones for areas you plan to take once off fishing outings to. Licences are not expensive and in many areas they are free to pensioners over sixty five years of age. The only difficulty arises in Andalusia where it is necessary to attend a two or three day course and pass a test before applying for a licence. In addition day tickets will be required on protected waters. Again in general costing just a few euros. For game fishing some stretches of water belong to water authorities or the state and one needs to enter a draw at the beginning of the year to obtain day permits.
Fishing clubs in Spain
There are many fresh water and sea fishing clubs affiliated to the national and regional fishing federations. Some are specialist black bass or game fishing. A federation card is necessary for entering competitions and also includes an element of insurance cover. In recent years U3A – University of the third age – associations have been set up in areas popular with expatriates and a good number include a fishing section. This is a good source of fishing partners to share travel costs and for waterside security. What is rare in Spain is private syndicate waters. So carp specialists for instance will enjoy the variety of fishing venues and the chance of first time caught wild specimens rather than well known named ones caught hundreds of times..
Fishing guidesMany inland fishing waters are very different to those in the UK and some are vast. So rather than spend a life time getting to know a local location after you have purchased a property it would be worthwhile taking a guided fishing trip test the waters before finalising where to live. Sea fishing guides operate out of some of the marinas, game fishing guides for trout sea trout and salmon are popular in northern Spain, while inland fishing guides can be found for carp, black bass, catfish and pike/pikeperch. If you like isolated fishing and living the Ebro area of Cataluña, the lake area of Extremadura and the northern mountain villages of Asturias and Cantabria are worth a serious consideration. On the mighty Ebro full of large fighting fish with carp to 50 to 60 lbs and catfish up to 200 lb it is a good idea to first take a guided day, three day or weeks guided fishing trip. A good guide we have experience of is Nick Shaddock contactable via 0034 680820728, andy.shattock@btinternet.com. and his Ebro carp fishing site www.ebrocarpfishing.com. If you are staying and searching for properties in southern Catalonia you can be picked up for a taster days fishing. For sea fishing the coastline and boat fishing from Almeria round to the Portuguese border seems to fish better that more northerly Mediterranean coastlines with the exception of the delta of the River Ebro and rock fishing on the Costa Brava. Excessive commercial fishing has spoilt the fishing in many areas over the past twenty years. Guided boat trips operate out of some marinas and ports. Books on fishing in SpainIn recent years a number of English language fishing guides have been published. These include Angling in Spain and Fly Fishing in Spain by Phil Pembroke, The guide to 30 fresh water fishing venues on the Costa Blanca by Peter Walkden and a new book ‘A guide to fishing in Andalucia’ by James Clear. WebsitesPhil Pemboke also has a useful website on coarse fishing in Spain www.spainfishing.com as well as Nick Shattocks site mentioned above. TV programmesThere is a daily subscription fishing channel on Digital television called ‘Caza y Pesca ’ – ‘Hunting and fishing.’. Happy fishing while searching for a property and once resident on a regular basis. © Clodagh and Dick Handscombe February 2011. |
